Goalposts- Law one of the game of football

Within Law one of the rules of football Goalposts information is set out for match officials to follow. The requirements do not include any safety or manufacturing information other than portable goals may only be used if they are securely anchored.

Sometimes companies miss inform goalpost customers that others goalposts are illegal which is not the case. No tolerances are allowed under the laws of the game which means crossbars with dipping crossbars do not confirm to the laws of the game and should not be used. Goalposts with thicker corners than the actual posts do not conform according to the laws of the game as they should have the same width and depth. Most council basic nut & Bolt goalposts do not conform to this basic rule. Goalpost nets should be held away at the top so as not to interfere with the goalkeeper and again many goalposts do not follow this basic rule. With regard to safety standards these apply to manufacturers and if goals follow these they can state this on sales literature. The possible un lawful matter with regard to goal posts is when manufacturers state goalpost are to a specific standard when they are not. Any goalposts made to the safety standards must conform to all aspects of the standard which includes finger entrapment. Many appear not to pass the current finger entrapment tests and therefore should not state that they conform but many do.

THE BASIC RULE WE FOLLOW IS THAT THE LIGHTER THE GOAL POST FRAME IS THE SAFER IT IS.

LAW ONE OF THE GAME

A goal must be placed on the centre of each goal line.
A goal consists of two upright posts equidistant from the corner
ﬂagposts and joined at the top by a horizontal crossbar.

The goalposts and crossbar must be made of wood, metal or other approved
material. They may be square, rectangular, round or elliptical in shape
and must not be dangerous to players.
The distance between the posts is 7.32 m (8 yds) and the distance
from the lower edge of the crossbar to the ground is 2.44 m (8 ft).
Both goalposts and the crossbar have the same width and depth,
which do not exceed 12 cm (5 ins). The goal lines must be of the same
width as the goalposts and the crossbar. Nets may be attached to the
goals and the ground behind the goal, provided that they are properly
supported and do not interfere with the goalkeeper.
The goalposts and crossbars must be white.
SAFETY Goals must be anchored securely to the ground. Portable goals may
only be used if they satisfy this requirement
